There's no place like HOME.

During the past few years the superyacht industry has witnessed a number of high-profile owners becoming increasingly concerned with the environmental impact of their yachts. Indeed, some are more interested in pushing the boat out when it comes to eco-innovation than others and are willing to pay more for greener vessels.

A superyacht will never be a full emission-free zone – all superyachts have air conditioning, for example. But the quest for low-emission cruising has led to new innovations in design, such as Heesen’s HOME, which is arguably the most exciting, fresh and forward-thinking addition to this sector of the charter market; in fact HOME is a perfect example of one owner’s attempt to create a luxurious superyacht with eco-friendly credentials.

Measuring 49.8m (163.4ft) in length, HOME was delivered in 2017 and is the first fast displacement all-aluminium build that can also be labeled as a hybrid. Focused on high efficiency, HOME is also the first Heesen yacht which incorporates a hybrid propulsion system to power the innovative Fast Displacement Hull Form, developed a number of years ago for Heesen by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen.

An innovation almost without a downside, the revolutionary Fast Displacement Hull Form technology bridges the divide between speed and range, which means that less power is required throughout the speed curve, which of course equates to less fuel burned, making her 30 percent more efficient than a traditional superyacht of the same size.

But beyond the remarkable and groundbreaking technical performance of the hull, her hybrid propulsion package now takes her to a whole new level. Previous hybrid yachts have used a diesel electric power base, but rather than being either all conventional diesel-mechanical or all diesel electric with batteries, HOME offers both.

HOME’s ultra-modern exterior design is the work of Frank Laupman at Omega Architects. The almost vertical bow looks radical on the water, but also reduces the hull’s vertical acceleration and improves comfort when cruising. She also has a modest 2.1m (6.9ft) draft allowing her to cruise the shallow waters of the Bahamas, where she will be based this summer. Another key feature that sets her apart from other yachts of her size is the beach club area. Accessed via a broad aft stairway leading from the main deck, the large swim platform area also provides access to the lower-deck wellness area. There's also an air-conditioned gym on the lower deck, accessible from the main deck. She also has a fabulous sun deck with a bar, jacuzzi and shaded dining area.

The spacious exterior and interior areas take inspiration from open-air beach villas. Panoramic glass walls offer unblemished views throughout, while cutaway bulwarks and floor-to-ceiling mirrors help bounce light around the light and airy interior. A colour palette of white, grey, silver and burgundy is used throughout, with different materials, including grey Koto, brushed spruce, Nero Setta and Bianco Neve marbles, all used to distinguish the different guest areas. The full-beam main-deck owner’s apartment sits forward, while a further five guest cabins, including a full-beam VIP, are located on the lower deck.
