Meet Captain Andrea on board CYAN
Published 12 November 2024
Captain Andrea Giuliano and the elegant CYAN are embarking on an exciting winter season in the Caribbean following a successful summer in the Mediterranean. With his dynamic crew, Andrea is on a mission to make this your best-ever charter.
At 48.7m (159.9ft), CYAN is a superyacht that stands out in the charter market, and that’s down to Andrea and his expertly selected crew. Since joining the yacht, he has been dedicated to a single mission: to make CYAN the yacht guests want to return to year after year.
How long have you been captain on board CYAN?
I first joined CYAN as chief officer in 2017 with my partner, and we were on board for three years. During this time, I did four back-to-back charter seasons and Atlantic crossings, and I also proposed to my now wife – it was a very special chapter for the both of us.
I then disembarked in 2020 to do my Master 3000 qualification and get married, and now five years later my wife and I have settled down in Mallorca and started a family. With my Master 3000 in hand and my experience as captain, when the opportunity to join CYAN again arose, I jumped at the chance.
How did you get to be captain?
I joined the yachting industry in 2010 (around the same time touch screen phones were first introduced!). I worked my way up the ranks on some of the most prestigious yachts in the industry, ranging from 38m to 74m. I got my first captain role in 2021 and never looked back.
Can you tell us a bit about CYAN? What makes her unique?
CYAN is unique because she is a perfectly restored Italian 1997-built superyacht. She has all the charm and classics of an Italian sportscar from the ‘90s, and the personality to go with it. She’s been updated with the latest AV/IT entertainment systems and all the latest watersports gear, plus she has a crew that are eager to showcase that she is truly one of the best charter yachts in the industry.
What are some of the standout features or amenities on board?
One feature guests love is the grand piano located in her sky lounge. For those that can’t play piano, there’s a 136-inch high-definition projector screen on the sun deck where you can watch TV and movies under the stars. The sun deck also has a fully kitted out gym with the latest fitness equipment, and guests can enjoy panoramic views while working out.
How do you and the crew personalise each voyage on CYAN?
Every trip is a once in a lifetime experience, and we make sure we treat them that way. For each charter, we collect footage and make a personalised video for the guests to take home on a branded CYAN USB stick. This special memento allows our guests to watch and reminisce on an incredible trip, all while planning the next one on board CYAN.
What are some of your favourite destinations to cruise?
We love visiting Croatia. It has so much to offer with a rich history and culture, quiet untouched bays with perfectly clear waters, and some of the best dining spots in the Mediterranean. You’re also able to see Venice in the north and Montenegro in the south, which is pretty special.
What’s the part you love most about your job as captain of CYAN?
The most rewarding part is when guests disembark with huge smiles on their faces asking when they can come back to the boat. It's so satisfying to know my crew and I have done a great job. Another part I love is driving the boat – it's great fun!
How do you prepare for and plan complex itineraries, especially when it comes to more remote locations?
We communicate with the guests to understand their preferences so we can prioritise. Local knowledge is always the best, so we contact tried and tested yacht agents, tour guides, and anyone that’s willing to share information about the area. We also have a database of yacht crew with a wealth of experience in any given region, which is really valuable.
The next step is to plan a physical visit to inspect restaurants, excursions or any activities. So essentially we do a mini run-through to ensure that on the day, everything goes smoothly and guests have the best experience.
Do you have any memorable stories from on board?
One of my favourite memories was after a busy six weeks at sea. I arrived at my home port to see my wife and baby waiting on the dock, which was the best possible welcome.
What advice would you give to those considering their first charter?
My advice would be to charter CYAN because she has everything to offer in terms of superyachting. Each charter on board is an incredible experience, and the trained crew know how to ensure everything you could want or need is catered for to enhance the enjoyment of your holiday.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career as a superyacht captain?
I’ve worked very hard during my career to get to where I am today. It’s easy to forget where you came from and what you went through on the way, so I try to stay mindful. When I get to take care of my guests, my fellow yachting colleagues, and my crew members, this is rewarding for me. It’s also rewarding to see how proud my family and friends are, especially as they love to brag about my role!
