Technical Manager

Burgess, the market-leading full-service superyacht company are looking for a Technical Manager to join their Yacht Management department in Palm Beach.

Job Purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to support yacht owners and crew with the maintenance and correct operation of managed yachts. The aim is to ensure that yachts are kept in good condition, maintained in Class, reliable,  capable of being used when required and compliant with applicable regulations.

Functional Responsibilities

The job holder will provide technical oversight, guidance and support to yacht managers for a number of vessels as allocated. This will include:
  • Technical management in accordance with the provisions of the underlying Yacht Management Agreement.
  • Verifying that the machinery and engineering systems on each yacht are operated and maintained in compliance with the Company’s Safety Management System and the ISM Code (where appropriate).
  • Review monthly maintenance reports and follow up as required.
  • Review defect reports and provide the yacht with guidance and support to rectify. Consider any requirements to notify Flag or Class.
  • Undertake periodic yacht visits. Prepare technical inspection reports and follow up items and issues as identified.
  • Create a long-term (5 year) plan of major works for each yacht.
  • Assist with the initial assessment of potential insurance claims including initial investigation, extent of damage, insurability, and probable consequences.
Assist with arranging routine dry dockings and maintenance periods. This includes:
  • Identify the scope of works. Assess whether the project falls within the scope of Technical Management according to the Yacht Management Agreement or whether there is an opportunity to generate incremental income by offering  additional services;
  • Develop refit specification using Smart Sheet templates;
  • Identify suitable shipyards and seek tenders for contract;
  • Review tenders and checking for compliance against service and contractual requirements;
  • Attend refit planning and progress meetings on board the yacht or in the shipyard as required;
  • Assist with the resolution of discoveries including variation orders and additional work instructions;
  • Ensure all shipyard & sub-contractor close out procedures are signed off prior to redelivery;
  • Maintain professional currency through self-directed learning and CPD

Corproate Responsibilities

  • Participate in an emergency support rota providing 24/7 technical support for 2 or 3 months p.a.
  • Represent the Company at boat shows and other trade events or meetings as agreed.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of Technical Team practices and processes.
  • Mentor junior technical staff.
  • Other tasks as reasonably requested

Qualification

  • Second Engineer, STCW  III/2 (Unlimited)
  • Chief Engineer, STCW III/2, (Y1)
  • STCW Electro technical officer Certificate of Competency

Experience and ability

  • Seagoing experience as a Chief Engineer on Large Yachts or as First Engineer on cruise ships.
  • Skilled communicator - verbal and written, able to communicate with people at all levels in a wide range of professional and social situations, tactful and diplomatic
  • Problem solver
  • Willing to work as a member of a team
  • Able to prioritise work and maximise the value of your time
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Able to travel worldwide at immediate notice
  • Resident within maximum 1.5 hours commuting distance from Palm Beach.
