Description
This sailing yacht was built to RINA classification in 2009 by Mengi Yay Yachts at their Tuzla shipyard outside Istanbul. GWEILO is a 47.6m (156.2ft) modern schooner designed by Dykstra & Partners on classic lines. However, her construction is anything but old fashioned: her hull is wood laminated epoxy, with aluminium masts and bowsprit. Her teak decks are supremely comfortable underfoot.
With main and foresails from Doyle offering 577sqm (6,210.8sqft) between them, primarily GWEILO is a sailing yacht and designed to perform as such. When not sailing, she has a 558hp Caterpillar engine that gives her 11.7 knots top speed and 10.5 knots for cruising, plus bow thrusters for manoeuvrability.
Interior designer Hakan Ezel has ensured that her living space is as beautiful as the rest of her. On deck there is a covered al fresco seating and eating area forward of the wheel, where varnished woodwork is complemented by jaunty cushions. This area will sit five diners comfortably, and ten or more for drinks.
On the same level, the deckhouse features a built-in sofa to port, with the chart table and navigation equipment to starboard. The equipment is all Simrad, Sailoc and Seatel. The darker, more muted wood finish sets the theme for GWEILO below. This cabin is lined with large windows, making a perfect place to sit.
The gangway leads to down below to the full beam saloon with a port lounge area and starboard dining table. The lounge has large sofas, a TV, fire grate, and skylight. The dining table makes a formal alternative to the al fresco option.
A Bose sound system and Sony TV offers entertainment aboard. Plus the 5.5m (18ft) Castoli tender and a selection of diving equipment, wakeboards and waterskis for fun at anchor – plus steps can be fitted to the side to allow safe swimming from the yacht. The deckhouse roof is ideal for sunbathing.
GWEILO sleeps six guests in three cabins, although pullman beds can be added to make this eight. The full beam owner’s cabin is aft of the main saloon and has a king sized bed, built-in sofas and ample wardrobe space. The other two cabins are forward of the saloon and comprise of a double and twin berths.
Crew quarters are in the fore cabins and include a captain’s double, plus private galley.
