Working together to improve ocean health

Wherever you are cruising this summer, did you know that if you work with Burgess you are supporting a ground-breaking project to protect seagrass in the Mediterranean through our work with Blue Marine Foundation?
Burgess Conservation
Research tells us that ocean health is a key factor in flighting climate change. This is the science behind our 2024 conservation project to map, protect and save seagrass meadows in the Mediterranean.
Mediterranean seagrass (Posidonia Oceanica) is essential to balancing ocean health. It provides a safe breeding ground for over 400 plant species and thousands of types of marine animal. Some seagrass species also absorb carbon 35 times faster than rainforest, making it one of the most important carbon sinks in the world.
However, this plant will only grow 1-6cm a year, and is losing ground at a rate of two football pitches an hour worldwide. Blue Marine Foundation is working with local fishing communities in the Greek Islands to map and protect the seagrass meadows that fringe their islands, restore their fish stock and protect their livelihoods.
This pioneering project could become a model for marine conservation across the Mediterranean. Burgess has committed our business to supporting Saving Seagrass as part of our wider commitment through 2030 to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
We all have a role in protecting these vital seagrass meadows. Anchor only on clear, sandy areas of seabed where neither anchor nor chain will land on or lay over seagrass. Download the DONIA app, which allows you to log existing seagrass meadows and will show you where to anchor safely.
