Sales Brokers Grant and Kevin on: island hopping by semi-custom yacht
Published 26 novembre 2024
We’ve looked at sporty and fast semi-custom yachts, and we’ve covered why Benetti makes excellent vessels worthy of Europe’s oldest superyacht builder. Now, we’re on focusing on island hopping.
We sat down with two of our sales brokers – Kevin Kramer from Burgess’ Beverly Hills office and Grant Henderson from Miami – to hear more.
Being under 50m, semi-custom yachts often have shallower drafts which, when combined with their speed, make them perfect for island hopping. As Grant explains, ‘fast day boats with jets and a shallow draft are excellent for places like the Bahamas. It’s a place everyone should visit and having a boat with speed and very little draft is the best way to explore.’
Anchor close by uninhabited islands for remote picnic set-ups, or gently cruise until you spot the perfect place for snorkelling. The options are endless.
Grant, do you have a favourite yacht?
‘I sold an SL118 Sanlorenzo a few years back. She had striking exterior lines and a Marty Lowe interior that was warm, felt like home, and had a beachy feeling. Despite the size, she had the capability of speed without having a large draft. Being a Sanlorenzo, she was easy to re-sell and was very unique for a semi-production builder.’
Kevin, is there one that stands out to you?
‘A perfect example of a proven semi-custom platform is the 44m Heesen G3. This semi-displacement series has been very successful, giving clients the combined benefits of excellent performance, plus comfort and stability at sea. She can reach top speeds over 20 knots which is perfect for coastal cruising and island hopping. Plus, a huge sun deck with a jacuzzi and a designated beach club will see you making the most of your cruising location.’
Will you choose the myriad Caribbean islands with their white sand beaches, historic coves and rich culture? Or will it be the Aeolian islands, famed for their volcanic landforms, ancient architecture and unbeatable cuisine? Whether you opt for one of these or a different array of islands, with a semi-custom yacht you’ll have complete freedom to plan your itinerary as you wish, waking up each morning in a new location.
For anyone considering their next yacht purchase, Kevin recommends that you first thinking about your needs as an owner and how you intend to use it. ‘A client should ask themselves what is most important to them when they consider how the yacht is to be operated. Do you value a sleek, open style design with limited layout options, or would you prefer a displacement yacht with a larger volume and more expansive deck areas?’
If you’re itching to get out onto the water on your very own vessel, a semi-custom yacht is a great option thanks to the significant time and cost saving elements. As Kevin explains, ‘As the hull, machinery and technical spaces have already been developed, this removes much of the time that would normally be spent on the design and pre-engineering phase of a custom build project.’
