We are excited to announce the launch of the Sustainable Seas framework. This new resource is designed to help yacht crew adopt practical, eco-friendly best practices and reduce their environmental impact across all areas of operation.
With practical changes and actionable tips conceived by current and former crew alongside yacht managers, and already trialled by a number of yachts, the handbook is delivered in a structured format for easy implementation on board and provides a roadmap for making sustainability a natural part of daily yacht life. Every small change contributes to a healthier ocean, and together, we can set a new standard for sustainable yachting.
An industry first, this will be rolled out systematically through our professional and highly capable management software. For those crew that are already making significant strides in reducing their environmental impact, please get in touch! This project will evolve based on new research, technology, and products, as well as feedback from those directly involved.
OUR MISSION IN ACTION
The Burgess Sustainable Seas initiative is inspired by Water Revolution Foundation’s Environmental Crew Guidelines, a phenomenal piece of work delivered open-source to the industry in February 2024, and the Foundation deserves huge recognition for leading the way.
Sustainable Seas is the next logical step in this process, integrating our management technology, structure and expertise. This is an evolving programme designed to:
- Educate: Provide clear, practical recommendations to reduce each yacht’s environmental operational impact
- Collaborate: Evolve continuously through community feedback, best practice references, and new research
- Guide: Offer step-by-step support to inspire crews, maintain momentum, and deliver lasting real change
‘This is something we all have an obligation to work with, and there is no barrier to entry. Larger yachts will have more to work with, while smaller yachts or even chase boats can cherry pick what is relevant to them. There’s no right or wrong, it’s about getting these things done and operating in a way that best fits your boat.

WHY IT MATTERS
Sustainability isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. There’s no perfect solution, but every step counts. Incremental changes lead to meaningful progress, and by working together we have huge potential. And for those on board who are already engaged in addressing the huge challenge of ocean health, Sustainable Seas will support and amplify your efforts. We all have a responsibility to examine our impact and look after the environment where we work and play.
