Fully custom

However, this level of customisation comes with a longer build time, typically ranging from three to five years. Semi-custom

Going down the semi-custom route offers a proven hull and engineering package, with customisable interiors and some layout flexibility. As Sales Broker Thibault Roi explains, ‘a semi-custom yacht is defined by the fact that the construction is based on a platform where most of the engineering, hull, and superstructure design will be the same from one hull to the next, while also offering an element of personalisation. Clients can therefore rely on a proven technical platform, with the flexibility to customise their yachts extensively, from the interior design, exterior design and amenities to a completely different layout and features.’

Pros and cons

Building a semi-custom yacht offers a lot of benefits. It’s an excellent choice for any buyer as it’s the perfect balance between designing a yacht that resembles you while being based on a tried-and-tested model.

• A shorter build time: Whether you choose to build a new one from scratch or buy one already in construction, since the engineering phase has already been completed, the delivery (subject to yard availability) will be faster.
• Cost-efficiency, reputation, and resale value: Generally, semi-custom yachts are more affordable as the design and engineering costs will be spread by the yard. Unless you purchase the first hull, you will also be able to inspect and review the quality of the series you are interested in to make the right choices, with a clearer expectation on her future resale value.
• Large inventory: Most semi-custom yachts will measure between 30m to 55m, and you will have access to an impressive range of options, from fast and sporty vessels to explorer units. It’s also a popular segment of both the charter and second-hand markets, thus representing a smart and controlled financial investment.

Looking at the cons, while few and far between, the main consideration is flexibility. Structural elements are largely set in stone and cannot be altered, so bear this in mind if there is a particular feature that is a ‘must’ for your yacht.

‘A seamless connection between indoor and outdoor areas remains extremely important in both markets, with an emphasis on direct access to water – whether a large pool, the sea, or in most cases both.
